ARDGOWAN CURLING CLUB · ESTABLISHED 1841

From Ardgowan Square to the Waterfront.

Ardgowan’s story spans the outdoor game, the growth of organised sport in Greenock and the modern era of curling at the Waterfront. Open the chapters below to explore the club’s continuing place in Inverclyde curling.

Ardgowan Curling Club crest

Ardgowan Curling Club was established in Greenock in 1841, when local gentlemen—including Sir Michael Robert Shaw Stewart of the Ardgowan Estate—created a club for curling, bowling and quoiting. Its original grounds were laid out in the area now known as Ardgowan Square.

From those nineteenth-century beginnings, Ardgowan became part of the long curling tradition of Greenock and the Clyde coast. The club adapted from the age of natural outdoor ice to purpose-built indoor rinks while retaining the fellowship, competition and voluntary service on which Scottish curling was built.

Today Ardgowan curls at the Waterfront Leisure Complex, organises the Clyde Coast League and welcomes experienced, returning and first-time curlers. The club is preserving its history while creating new opportunities for people of every age to enjoy the game.

1841The founding of the Ardgowan Club

Ardgowan Curling Club traces its origins to 1841, when a group of local gentlemen established the Ardgowan Club in Greenock. Sir Michael Robert Shaw Stewart of the Ardgowan Estate was closely associated with its foundation.

The new club supported curling alongside bowling and quoiting. Its grounds were laid out in the area now known as Ardgowan Square, giving organised outdoor recreation a lasting home in Greenock’s West End.

19th centuryCurling, fellowship and the outdoor game

Early curling depended on winter weather and suitable natural ice. Matches were occasions for competition, fellowship and hospitality, with members giving their time to organise play and maintain the club’s sporting traditions.

Ardgowan formed part of the wider network of Renfrewshire and Clyde coast clubs that kept the game active through local matches and inter-club competition.

Changing iceFrom natural ponds to indoor rinks

As artificial ice became available, curling was no longer dependent on prolonged frost. Ardgowan moved with the game through successive generations and into the modern indoor era.

The venue changed, but the essentials remained familiar: rinks formed around skips and players, friendly rivalry between neighbouring clubs and volunteers keeping fixtures and competitions running.

Clyde coastCompetition beyond the club

Ardgowan has maintained strong links with clubs throughout Inverclyde and the wider Clyde coast. The club organises the Clyde Coast League, bringing teams together in a continuing programme of competitive curling.

Historic and revived competitions—including the Ram’s Head—show how club traditions can be carried forward while remaining relevant to present-day curlers.

TodayA welcoming club at the Waterfront

Ardgowan now curls at the Waterfront Leisure Complex in Greenock. Members take part in club, local and inter-club competition while supporting the wider curling community.

The club welcomes experienced players, returning curlers and people stepping onto the ice for the first time. Try Curling activity, shared leagues and public results help make the game easier to discover and follow.

Next chapterPassing the game to another generation

Ardgowan’s history is not being preserved simply as an archive. It provides a foundation for encouraging new members, supporting junior development and giving more local people the opportunity to experience curling.

By combining a long-established club identity with modern communication, accessible sessions and cooperation between clubs, Ardgowan aims to ensure that curling remains part of Inverclyde’s sporting life for years to come.

Historical note and sources

This account is based on the club’s own historical information and surviving records concerning the founding of the Ardgowan Club in 1841, together with current competition records and material supplied by club members. Further photographs, trophies, minute-book extracts and personal recollections can be added as the archive develops.
